Getting back to our Roots

At ROOTEDpnw our mission is to help people grow, cook and entertain with confidence.

Through classes, workshops and one-on-one consultation, we teach the skills and understanding needed to do it yourself so healthy, seasonal living becomes second nature. This fosters good health and connection to nature, your roots and each other.

Meet Katie Surbeck

Katie is the founder and lead instructor of ROOTEDpnw, a program designed to reconnect its participants with growing and cooking local food, learning traditional skills and fostering good health and community.

As a pacific northwest native and avid outdoorswoman, Katie has over 30 years of experience gardening, cooking, urban farming and entertaining. These skills were initially passed down from her parents and grandparents and personally expanded through continuing education and mentorship over the decades. Katie highly values the experience of growing and cooking wholesome food while connecting with nature and community. She hopes that sharing these skills will help others feel more rooted and healthy, both physically and mentally, through good nutrition and connection to themselves, the natural world and each other.

Katie holds a BS in Zoology and a Master’s degree in Physical Therapy. She is a trained Culinary Health Education Coach and Certified Master Gardener for King County. She has taught fly fishing and outdoor skills for the non-profit Washington Outdoor Women since 2008 and is the current chair of her local city Park Board. As the mother of three adult children and a two time cancer survivor, Katie believes that healthy food and strong relationships are critical to creating thriving balanced health. One of her greatest joys is serving her friends and loved ones homegrown food in her backyard while making memories and sharing laughter around the table, all things that nourish their bodies and souls. She hopes to foster the confidence and joy in others to do the same!
